US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington wants to see “untrusted” Chinese-owned apps removed from US tech companies’ app distribution platforms. Speaking on August 5, 2020, Pompeo said his appeal to the likes of Google and Apple is part of an expansion of America’s “clean network” campaign to reduce potential security risks to the US from other countries. He mentioned a need to shield US vaccine research from being accessed on cloud based systems run by companies such as Baidu, China Mobile, China Telecom, Tencent and Alibaba – which also owns the South China Morning Post.
