Filmed on Wednesday, August 16 2023, I drive around the village Spring Green, WI to see what’s going on.
Spring Green, Wisconsin is a unique and vibrant town located in the southwestern region of Sauk County, with the majestic Wisconsin River forming its southern boundary. The town, established in 1850, has a rich history and a strong connection to the world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Frank Lloyd Wright, born in nearby Richland Center, had deep roots in Spring Green, spending significant time in the area with his mother’s family, the Lloyd-Joneses of Wyoming Valley. He solidified his connection to the town when he constructed the first Taliesin studio in 1911, after leaving his family and home in Oak Park, Illinois. Although his relationship with Spring Green was complicated due to personal tragedies and local disapproval, Wright’s legacy has left a lasting impact on the community.
Spring Green has since become a growing tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the world who are interested in Wright’s architectural legacy, as well as the town’s other cultural and natural attractions. These include the American Players Theater, Tower Hill State Park, and the House on the Rock.
The town itself is beautifully situated in a diverse landscape, with two-thirds lying within the lush Wisconsin River valley, fostering agricultural and residential activity, while the northern third features the hills and hollows of the ‘Driftless Area’, characterized by limestone outcroppings and dairy farming. This combination of features typifies rural southwestern Wisconsin, offering a picturesque setting for both residents and visitors.
In partnership with the Village of Spring Green, the town has cultivated a thriving arts and tourism scene, further enhanced by its close proximity to agri-tourism sites and a growing artist community. This has resulted in steady population growth over the past few decades, as more people choose to call Spring Green home, some commuting from as far as 30 miles away in Madison.
Spring Green stands out as far from your typical small town. It offers a tranquil setting with unexpected amenities typically found in larger towns, making it a wonderful place to live, work, and visit. The town’s creative energy, undoubtedly influenced by its connection to Frank Lloyd Wright, continues to foster a sense of community and vibrancy that is truly unique to Spring Green.
